The company was founded in 1923 as “The General Insurance Company of America” with headquarters in Seattle, WA. Known by many sports fans as the home of the Seattle Mariners’ baseball team, Safeco held the naming rights to the field from 1999 through 2018.
Liberty Mutual Insurance acquired Safeco in 2008 and it continues to operate as an independent subsidiary.
